South Korea is expected to introduce a local autonomous police system as early as 2020 in which many national police duties will be handed over to local police units to be put under direct control of local governments.

 The roadmap for introducing the local police system unveiled by the Presidential Committee on Local Autonomy Development also calls for enacting the so-called "autonomous police act" and implementing the local police system as a pilot project in five major cities and provinces next year.

Currently, all South Korean police forces except for those in Jeju Province belong to the central government. Introducing the local autonomous police system was one of President Moon Jae-in's campaign pledges in last year's presidential election.

 Details of what the local police system will look like have yet to be worked out, committee officials said, including what duties local police should take over from the national police force and how much investigative rights local police should be given.
