132 330 | How do wildfires start and spread?, October 29, 2019
Wildfires can have a variety of reasons for starting.
Mostly,
they’re caused by humans — by our own activity or our equipment. A
study published in 2017 found that 84% of U.S. wildfires were caused by
human related activity; the remaining 16% were caused by lightning.
About 95% of fires the California Department of Forestry and Fire
Protection responds to are caused by humans.
