84 433 | 2,000-Acre Woolsey Fire Near Ventura-L.A. County Line Prompts Mandatory Evacuations in Bell Canyon, Oak Park, November 8, 2018

A growing brush fire by the Santa Susana Field Laboratory in Simi Hills is being pushed by strong winds, prompting mandatory evacuations in the Bell Canyon area Thursday evening.

The Woolsey Fire was estimated at 2,000 acres as of about 6 p.m., about 3 1/2 hours after it started, according to the Ventura County Fire Department.

About 20 homes in Bell Canyon were evacuated, and the Fire Department said 20 structures were threatened. Fire officials issued voluntary evacuation orders for neighborhoods in the northeast section of the Oak Park neighborhood about 10 p.m, which became mandatory evacuations about an hour later as the fire continued to grow.

The fire, which broke out shortly before 2:30 p.m. in the 25000 Woolsey Canyon Road, is being pushed in a southwest direction by a 45 mph wind out of the north.

The fire comes amid a red flag warning for Santa Ana winds in Ventura and Los Angeles counties. The strongest winds should occur Thursday night, and relative humidity will drop into the single digits, according to the National Weather Service.  Area fire crews already have their hands full with another fire – called the Hill Fire – in Thousand Oaks, which has prompted more mandatory evacuations and the closure of the 101 Freeway.
